Be smart, wear sunscreen

Here is a short list of things people always say you should do, but you never really do anyway: drink 8 glasses of water a day, go for evening runs on the beach, iron your shirts and wear sunscreen every day.

If you were going to pick only one item from the above list to follow through with, sun protection is it, because there's no turning back the clock on premature aging. And I can only assume you're pretty well-versed in knowing what's good for your own body, especially when it comes to crinkled shirts and what one should or shouldn't do on the beach.

First, i'd like to breakdown the science behind why SPF is so important. Sun damage is a real thing that can lead to some really serious other things too. And if you're not convinced that wearing a daily sun shield is good, no, benign for your health, here are the facts:

There are 2 kinds of UV rays, UVA and UVB. Both harm the skin. The kind that penetrate and damage skin cells when the sun is shining are called UVA rays. They’re able to penetrate the deeper layers of skin, which is what causes you to tan.

There are also ultraviolet rays that can cause sun damage when it’s overcast. Those are UVB rays. They push through the clouds and are not blocked by rainy weather. Scary! This means that no matter what you’re doing or where you’re going, if you step outside, sunscreen should be applied to your face.

Both UVA and UVB rays can cause sun damage by harming skin cells and altering their DNA. Sun damage is a direct cause of age spots, pigmentation, premature aging and skin cancer. So it goes without saying that sunblock is literally the best anti-aging product on the market.

And fortunately, sun shields have come a long way in recent years and there are so many different products out there to choose from. They're clean, don't clog pores or make your forehead look shiny.

Below is a list of hard working sun protection products to consider adding to your daily routine. Think of it as a personal investment in your skin, and one that’ll pay off over time. Your future self will thank you.

For sensitive skin try... Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream SPF 30

This is a super nourishing facial hydrator, best suited to dry and sensitive skin as it not only protects skin against UV damage with a broad spectrum SPF 30, but it also multi-tasks as a barrier against the other elements like extreme cold, harsh winds and free-radical damage.

One for the beach bag...  Natural Lab SPF 30 Sunscreen

If you’re going swimming, keep this one on hand. It’s vegan, water-resistant and also rich in antioxidants that won’t make you breakout. Developed for sensitive skin, it’s safe to use on babies too.

Keep this one in your handbag... Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream SPF30
